Windows has been the de-facto standard desktop/laptop computer operating system since the 1990’s. Windows standardized the graphic user interface for most of the computing world. It grew and continued to grow in size and functionality since then.
So why dump it now? Two important reasons are:
- Windows keeps getting bigger and slower, especially on smaller and older computers. Windows is a resource hog requiring large disk space and a lot of memory.
- Window is the primary target for most malware attacks. Think of the recent “WannaCry” and “Petya” ransomeware attacks. Attacks against Linux systems are far less frequent.
Linux is one of several reasonable alternative to Windows. In future posts I will discuss some of the pros and cons of Linux and other alternatives.
